How to Tell if a Tarot Deck Is AI-Generated

Open any tarot marketplace right now and half the new decks look suspiciously the same: glossy, symmetrical, a little too perfect, and made by a "studio" with no name behind it. A lot of them are AI. There is nothing evil about using tools, but a deck is something you sit with for years, and an AI deck is usually a pile of pretty pictures with no one on the other end of the brush. Here is how to spot one, why it matters, and what a genuinely hand-made deck looks like instead. (New to decks generally? Start with our guide to choosing your first tarot deck.)

The telltale signs an image is AI-generated

No single clue is proof, but stack a few of these and you can usually tell.

• Gibberish on the cards. Look at any text, runes, numbers, or titles. AI image models are famously bad at lettering. If the card says something like "TIEPERRANNT" where "Temperance" should be, or the suits look like alien alphabet, that is AI.
• Too symmetrical, too smooth. Real painted or drawn art has unevenness, brush texture, tiny imperfections. AI loves perfect mirroring and a plasticky finish. If every figure looks airbrushed and identical in style to the last ten decks you scrolled, be suspicious.
• Hands, eyes, and symbols drift. Count the fingers. Look at the eyes. Check that the sword, cup, pentacle, or wand is actually a recognizable object and not a melted blob that implies one. AI fumbles small consistent details.
• No artist, no process. A real deck has a person, a timeline, and usually a sketchbook. If the listing names no artist, shows no work-in-progress, and the "brand" is a faceless print-on-demand shop, it is almost certainly AI prompt output.
• A hundred decks, one style. Same seller pumping out deck after deck in the same glossy style, each "launching" weekly? That is a content farm, not a creator.
• Symbols that do not mean anything. In a real deck, the art encodes meaning, the lily, the tower, the number of stars, all chosen. AI decorates. If the imagery is random pretty filler that does not connect to the card's meaning, that is a clue.

Why it matters which deck you read with

Tarot is a conversation between you and a set of symbols someone chose on purpose. When a real artist draws The Empress, they decided what grew in her garden and why. That intention is what your intuition latches onto during a reading. An AI image has no intention behind its details, it just filled pixels that statistically look like "an empress," so there is less for you to actually read. You can absolutely use an AI deck and still get insight, because the meaning is partly yours. But you are doing all the work, and the deck is not meeting you halfway.

There is also the small matter of who you are giving your money to. A hand-made deck pays a person who spent months or years on it. An AI deck usually pays a drop-shipper who typed a prompt.

What a no-AI, hand-made deck actually looks like
