The Complete 52-Card Deck

Please Note: Some face cards below are placeholders while the deck is being hand-illustrated and painted. Thank you so much for being supportive!

The gallery above shows all 52 cards of the Calypso Star Lenormand deck. Every card features original artist-designed artwork.

The art

Fifty-two originals. One pocket deck.

Every card is an oil painting. They start big - thirty-six inches square, a few four feet across - and scan down to poker size. A few are still on the easel. The originals stay in the studio; the deck is the pocket version. The gallery below features all 52 completed cards.

Artist Note: Some face cards are currently placeholders while the full deck is being hand-illustrated and painted on the easel. Thank you so much for being supportive of the process!

Watch it move

The real pace of a hand-made deck.

This is one of the oil paintings in the Lenormand - oils on canvas, drying on the easel while I talk through it. Just paint, and the time it takes to dry. This is what you are backing. I will film more of these as the campaign runs - the art coming real, one by one, so you can see exactly what you are ushering in.

The story

The myth found her.

I didn't set out to paint the Odyssey. I painted an island girl, and the myth found her. Calypso Star is a 52-card oracle and Lenormand deck, painted in oils, some of the canvases four feet across. It deals as a poker deck too. This is how it happened.

Penelope was the first of these oil paintings, bridging from the abstracts. Early 2026.

I didn't think she was Penelope at the time. I just thought of her as island girl. I thought she might be Calypso, until I painted the one that was Calypso.

You can't unsee that. It just is.

Athena came next. A confrontational spirit. Maybe I was confronting my emotions there, and decided to stand up for myself.

Then came the Rider. I thought this was the Knight of Wands. Then I realized it was an energy leaving my life.

Then the Sirens took forever. Three months of pecking at it. Refinement. Challenging perfectionism. Sculpting away, adding and removing, refining. Impasto like crazy.

I want you to feel like you love something so much you can't bear to live without it. Until you are depleted, and realize you always could have lived without it, and you are free, and better off, and loved the way you are.

Not needing. Not perfect. Not coping. Not over-giving or explaining. Just be still, and you are OK the way you are.

You were the one splashing around the whole time, making your own waves you drowned in.

Come up for air.

The Complete Epic Story

Seven Years on Ogygia: The Shipwreck, The Enchantment & The Raft

I. The Shipwreck & Arrival

After the fall of Troy and the fury of Zeus's thunderbolts destroyed his last ship and crew, Odysseus clung to the splintered keel for nine days, drifting across the sea. On the tenth night, the dark waves washed him ashore onto Ogygia, the omphalos—the navel of the sea—where the sea-nymph Calypso, daughter of Atlas, dwelt. She welcomed the exhausted wanderer, bathed him, fed him ambrosia, and nursed him back to life.

II. The Seven-Year Enchantment & Longing

For seven years, Calypso offered Odysseus everything an immortal could give: eternal youth, freedom from death, and an everlasting home in her paradise of cedar-scented caves, lush vines, and violet meadows. Yet, despite her beauty and love, his heart remained tethered across the sea to Ithaca, where his wife Penelope faithfully wove her tapestry by day and unwove it by night. Every afternoon, Odysseus sat on the rocky headland of Ogygia, weeping into the wind as he stared across the wine-dark sea.

III. Hermes Arrives with Zeus's Decree

At last, Athena pleaded Odysseus's cause before Zeus on Mount Olympus. Zeus dispatched Hermes, the swift-winged messenger, down to Ogygia. Skimming the ocean like a sea-gull, Hermes delivered Zeus's absolute command: Calypso must let the mortal traveler go; it was not his destiny to perish on her island. Though broken-hearted, Calypso bowed to the decree of Olympus.

IV. The Raft & Setting Free

Calypso led Odysseus to the tall timber stands of alder, poplar, and pine on the island's edge. She gave him a heavy bronze axe and adze, and together they felled twenty trees. For four days, Odysseus labored, shaping logs into a sturdy raft, building a deck, fitting a mast and sail, and weaving willow hurdles to ward off the sea. On the fifth day, Calypso clothed him in fragrant garments, stocked his raft with bread, sweet water, and red wine, and sent a gentle, favoring wind to guide him toward Ithaca.

— Retold from Homer's Odyssey, Books V & XII

This eternal tale of sanctuary, longing, and setting sail is the mythic heart of the Calypso Star Lenormand.

Two decks in one

Friday night poker. Sunday morning readings.

Most Lenormand decks are 36 cards and live in a drawer. This one is a full 52, so it never has to.

As a poker deck

Four suits, thirteen ranks, two jokers. Deal a hand, play your game. The art is the only thing that gives away that this is not an ordinary deck.

As a Lenormand

Every card carries a Lenormand symbol and keyword. Lay three cards for past, present, threshold. The images do the talking. The guidebook has your back.

System 1: Traditional Cartomancy

How to Read Traditional 36-Card Lenormand

Traditional Petit Lenormand is a 36-card system built on direct, practical symbols (the Rider, Clover, Ship, House, Tree, Snake, Ring, Anchor, etc.) assigned to playing card ranks 6 through Ace across all four suits.

Unlike Tarot, where individual cards carry complex psychological archetypes, Lenormand reads like a sentence. Cards modify each other in pairs and lines:

  • The Noun + Adjective Rule: Card 1 is the primary topic (Noun); Card 2 is the modifier (Adjective). For example, The Ship (Travel/Distance) + The Anchor (Stability) = A safe, long-term journey or overseas settlement.
  • 3-Card Daily Line: Lay 3 cards left to right for a direct snapshot of Past → Present → Outcome.
  • The Grand Tableau: The signature Lenormand spread where all 36 cards are laid out at once, revealing a complete bird's-eye map of work, love, finances, and timing.

System 2: The Calypso 52-Card Innovation

How to Read the 52-Card Calypso Star Deck

The Calypso Star Lenormand bridges centuries of tradition with modern versatility by operating in three flexible modes:

🃏

1. Traditional 36-Card Mode

Pull out the 36 classic cards (ranks 6 through Ace) to read traditional Petit Lenormand spreads, line readings, and Grand Tableaus exactly as taught for 200 years.

✨

2. Extended 52-Card Mode

Use the full 52-card deck—including the extra 2s, 3s, 4s, and 5s featuring original tropical archetypes (The Promise, The Message - An Answer, The Hearth, The Labyrinth, The Raft)—for deeper intuitive nuance, expanded spreads, and rich daily readings.

🂡

3. Standard 52-Card Poker Mode

Play poker, solitaire, or card games with standard 4 suits, 13 ranks, and 2 jokers. The artwork turns game night into a visual experience.

What is in the box

The deck, the book, the box.

The full 52-card Calypso Star Lenormand, printed on smooth card stock with a linen or matte finish (backer's choice at the final stretch goal). A guidebook that walks you from your first three-card pull to a full Grand Tableau. A box that keeps it safe - a tuck box to start, upgrading to a rigid two-piece box when we hit the stretch goal. Every backer at the deck tier and up gets all of it.

Why back this on Kickstarter

An ace-of-coins moment.

The Ace of Coins is the card where something precious crosses into the physical world - welcomed in, ushered in, made real because people cared it into being. That is what backing this is. You are not chasing a bargain. You are the reason a hand-made deck leaves the studio and lands in your hands.

You bring it into being

A hand-made deck only exists if people welcome it in. Your pledge is what turns the art into printed cards, a guidebook, a box - a real thing you can shuffle.

Your name in the guidebook

Backers at the guidebook tier and up get printed in the credits. The deck remembers who ushered it in.

You help shape it

Vote on which card gets painted next, and see each new painting first, as it comes off the easel.

The hand-made one

This is the hand-made deck. Every card is an oil painting by the artist. Backing it is how the slow, hand-made version gets made at all.

You hold it first

The first decks go to the people who made them possible - before the deck ever reaches the shop.

An edition that won't be reprinted

Gilded edges, the signature card, the credits stay with this campaign. The retail deck will not have them.

The Kickstarter edition will not be reprinted. Once it ships, it is gone.

Stretch goals

The more we fund, the nicer it gets.

Every stretch goal reaches every backer at the deck tier and up. The deck just arrives nicer.

$10,000
Gilded gold edges on every deck. The whole deck catches the light.
$20,000
Rigid two-piece box upgrade. The tuck box becomes a keepsake box.
$35,000
Guidebook upgraded to full color with extra pages and a Grand Tableau walkthrough.
$50,000
Bonus 53rd Calypso Star signature card plus a fabric pouch for every deck.
$75,000
Backer's choice of finish - matte or linen - on every deck.

Timeline

Honest dates.

Now

Finishing the last paintings in oils.

Campaign live

A 30-day run. Back your tier, watch the stretch goals climb.

After funding

Finish the remaining cards, then pre-press and printer sampling - the alignment corrections and color proofing that make a deck look right.

Production

About 8 to 10 weeks at the printer once the proof is approved.

Shipping

Decks ship roughly 4 to 5 months after the campaign closes. Packed and posted from the US.

Original art and printing both have real lead times. I would rather give you an honest late date and ship early than promise early and ship late. Three campaigns in, I have learned to say that out loud.

Who I am

Three campaigns. Four decks. All delivered.

I am the deckmaker behind Calypso Star. Three of my campaigns have funded and four decks came out of them - Empathic Mirror, the Mana-Fest Light Weave and Dark Weave pair, and Witchy Woman - and not one of them squeaked by. They funded at 229%, 257%, and 190%, to 245 backers. Kickstarter lists me as a Superbacker and a Backer Favorite. Every deck ships from the US, from my own hands. The Calypso Star shop is live right now at calypsostar.com with five decks, guidebooks, and digital downloads, all shipping today.

I make decks I want to shuffle. The Calypso Star Lenormand is the one I have wanted longest. I would love for you to help me finish it.

Risks and challenges

The honest part.

Making 52 pieces of original art is slow. I started before the campaign so most of it is already in progress, and I will keep working through the run - but art takes the time it takes, and backers will see that pace honestly, card by card.

Printing has its own lead time. Sampling, alignment corrections, and color proofing can add weeks. I build that into the timeline above rather than hiding it, and I will use a vetted printer with a proof I approve before any deck is cut.

Because every card is made by hand, tiny variations between the original and the print are part of the charm. This is the one with a person behind it.

Shipping is the last variable. I charge it after the campaign at real cost so no one overpays, and I pack from home so I know what goes in the box. Three campaigns funded, three delivered, zero abandoned.

FAQ

Good questions.

Is the art really hand painted?

Yes. Every card is an oil painting by me. The originals go up to four feet across and live in my studio. A few are still on the easel. Each one is scanned and printed down to card size.

Can I actually play poker with it?

Yes. It is a full 52-card deck with suits and ranks, plus two jokers. Deal a hand any time. The Lenormand symbols live alongside the suit markings.

Do I need to know Lenormand already?

Nope. The guidebook starts at zero. A three-card past, present, threshold pull is enough to read your first spread the day it arrives.

What size is it?

Poker size, 2.5 x 3.5 inches. It fits standard sleeves and shuffles like a normal deck.

When does it ship?

Roughly 4 to 5 months after the campaign closes. See the Timeline section for the full breakdown.

Will it be sold after Kickstarter?

Yes, on calypsostar.com - but the Kickstarter edition (gilded edges, the signature card, your name in the credits) is the one that ushered it into being, and it will not be reprinted. Backers hold it first.

International shipping?

Yes. It is calculated at real cost in the pledge manager after the campaign, so you pay what the post office charges, not a padded estimate.

Can I get just the digital guidebook?

Yes. There is a digital-only add-on in the pledge manager, and the $1 Message in a Bottle tier gets you into the votes without buying the deck.
