The Unapologetic Oracle

A fool's take on saying the quiet things out loud. An Autistic shadow work oracle deck.

Part of Kickstarter's Witchstarter · October

What it is

Under the smile.

Most oracle decks tell you who you could be. This one is about the person you already are when nobody is watching, and the several other people you are when they are. It was made from the inside, by an Autistic artist, and every card starts with the face you show and turns it over.

“Under the smile there is something that's hard to see and more real. You fake being happy, you blend in, and under that you're a wad of swapping characters, landing on one for a few days at a time. Like you have two friends who can never meet, because they know two different versions of you.”

The artist, on what the deck is about

A green ball on a card means it feels good from inside. Genius. Energized. Inner Joy.

A red ball means it doesn't. Anxiety. Toxic. Stressed Out. You can read the deck at a glance without the book.

“If it's green to me it could be red to others.”

The one line that explains the whole deck

The cards

A jester with a blank painted face, and the masks in every frame.

Fifty-two cards at oracle size, 3.5 by 5 inches. Black-ink figures on cream, a gold-and-teal frame with masks worked into it, and one small coloured ball on each card that tells you which way it leans.

Two cards in their finished form. Every card gets this treatment: the ink figure, the frame, the flat teal title panel, and the ball.

The guidebook

Every card has two layers. On the surface, and underneath.

No other oracle guidebook is written this way, because the format is the subject. The surface is what the card looks like from outside. Underneath is what it costs. Two entries, as they read in the book:

GENIUS

One thing, polished to gold

On the surfaceEureka. You found it. Razor sharp, flow state, in the now, and you're not stopping until it's done and you're happy. You drill into the tiny details and work it until it's perfect. This is where you shine. It's real and it's yours.

UnderneathOne thing at a time. Not ten. Not even two. One thing polished to perfection and presented like gold, while the house goes to hell and you smell like a garbage can. You could die in that chair. You'd be happy.

MISTAKE

You only need to make it once

On the surfaceDon't repeat the past. And you won't. You're a fast learner. Once is enough. You've never made the same one twice.

UnderneathBut you had to make it. All the way. You couldn't be told, couldn't read it somewhere, couldn't watch it happen to somebody else and take the shortcut. You had to swing the knife and let it land on you. That's not carelessness. Being warned isn't learning, not for you. Nothing goes in until it's happened to you completely, so the cut is the lesson, and there was never a cheaper way to get it. No blood. Just two halves. And you'll never do that again.

The book

Unlocking Your Authenticity.

Deck and book are one work. The ink portraits that turn up in the book are the same cast that stands in the card frames, so you meet the same figures in both. The book is the long form: fourteen chapters on doing things your own way, dropping the mask, using tarot as a mirror, shadow work and the inner child, and standing in your truth without apologising for it. Spreads, exercises and notes pages run through it.

  • Permitting yourself to do things differently
  • Drop the mask
  • Tarot as a mirror
  • Shadow work with tarot
  • Inner child work
  • Integrating the shadow
  • The power of self-trust and intuition
  • Seeing through the veil
  • Tuning in your intuition
  • The importance of authenticity
  • Cultivating harmony
  • Healing vibrations
  • North and south: balancing your energy
  • Unapologetically me

Every chapter opens on a full page of its own painting.
